End of All Things: Sermon 4

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!
Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention.
Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling places that are not their’s.
They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves.
                                                                                                                   Habakkuk 1:1-7
From Habakkuk’s day to ours people have asked two questions:
1. Why doesn’t God answer my prayers?
2. Why does God tolerate evil?

We often look at the condition of our lives, the prayers left unanswered (to our satisfaction) and question why things happen to us. If we believe in God what are we suffering and feeling pain? We may also look at our society and ask why God is not doing anything about the wickedness, the evil, the theologians that spread a false doctrine and accept the wickedness around them as good. Truth is, Satan is responsible for the chaos on earth.  His mission is to destroy the faith of God’s people. But if you truly believe in God, that Jesus is Lord, nothing that surrounds us will deter you from Him. We ask God why he isn’t doing anything to aide our world, but He already did. He sent His son to redeem us.  His son died on the cross that we may live.

Our problems are not political, or cultural.  Our problems are spiritual and lie in the fact that we do not recognize all that God has done for us already, that nothing else is needed. Does he want to give us more? Yes. Will he give us more? Sometimes. But, in the absence of more what we have is enough.

Let today be a reminder that the Just live by Faith. Not what is done for us today, not by our works, but by faith.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” – Romans 1:15-17

“Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.” – Habakkuk 2:4

But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” – Galatians 3:11

Habakukk saw the collapse of the economy, famine, loss of income, but was convinced that God was still God. God was still in charge.
